The Miss Universe - Beauty Queens That Make A Difference

Miss Universe beauty pageant has been held since 1952. Since then, it has attracted beautiful women from around the world to compete not only through beauty but also by means of wit and intelligence.

Just like any other beauty competitions, the Miss Universe comes into being partly for a cause, and that is to help the needy. For more than six decades, contestants and reigning Miss Universe have their own humanitarian fellowship and voice to affect positive change in the universe.

What humanitarian work did the Miss Universe engage in for the duration of her reign?

The Miss Universe primary concern is to fight against HIV/AIDS epidemic. Every title holder had traveled far and wide championing this cause and spreading awareness for how to protect everyone from getting infected with the disease and create access to medical care.

But the Miss Universe Organization's humanitarian endeavor is not only limited to HIV and AIDS as a reigning beauty queen also visits different countries around the world to support both government and non-government organizations' advocacies.

In my not so extensive research, I have found out several humanitarian works reigning Miss Universe engages in aside from raising awareness of HIV/AIDS.

Whether or not the Miss Universe Organization is directly involved in the following humanitarian activities, the beauty queens themselves, their title as Miss Universe and the organization they represent still deserve the credit for helping in one way or another human beings who badly need one.

During her reign as Miss Universe 1993, Dayanara Torres of Puerto Rico was appointed as Ambassador to UNICEF or United Nations Children's Fund that provides humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries. She would not have been chosen to take the task, if she had not been crowned as the Miss Universe that year.

In 2005, Natalie Glebova of Canada attended the G8 Summit in New York City. The annual forum for for the leaders of Canada, the European Commission, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States that she attended that year discussed and worked toward ending poverty in underdeveloped regions. It also endeavored to ending gang activity and drug cartels in Colombia. In the same year, Miss Universe 2005 Visited Thailand to take part in the first year commemoration of the 2004 tsunami tragedy.

2010 Miss Universe Ximena Navarrete of Mexico visited her home place Guadalajara as part of the US-based humanitarian organization Children International to give assistance to over 12,000 poor children there.

Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler of Venzuela paid a visit in the Philippines in the aftermath of typhoon Yolanda to help raise funds for the typhoon victims.

Pia Wurtzbach of the Philippines,the Miss Universe 2015, delivered a speech against bullying at the Speakers Forum for the International Students of the Language Academy of Canada wherein she shared some of her childhood experiences as a victim of bullying. She also traveled to Machala, Ecuador to give hope and assistance to the victims of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that claimed 600 innocent lives. There she helped Guayas Red Cross in its global appeal to raise resources to build 6,000 homes for the earthquake victims.

This 2017, all the Miss Universe candidates dined with the kids from Concordia Children Services who have experienced abandonment and neglect of their parents or relatives.

The Miss Universe Organization is definitely not only formed to show off beautiful women in the universe or to make money probably from giving rights to different networks in the world to broadcast the contest or from a countless of invitations of the reigning Miss Universe, especially days after being crowned.

As they have highlighted, the Miss Universe Organization is aimed towards raising awareness for HIV/AIDS and looking for avenues to provide victims easier access to medical care. On top of its primary advocacy, helping people from different walks of life who are suffering from any sort of predicaments and misfortunes is such a huge help.
